Curacao – In love with Curacao

Curacao – In love with Curacao

On a very cold and snowy morning, we went to the airport for our flight to paradise island Curacao. And paradise we found !!!

Curacao,  a small island nation is the epitome of a Caribbean island. Curacao is found in the southern Caribbean Sea only 40 miles off the Venezuelan coast. A former Dutch colony where Caribbean, African, Latin and European culture mixes together in a gaudy carpet. Curacao is one of the best kept secrets in the Caribbean. In 2012 voted the best Caribbean destination by the readers of about.com

The Kura Holanda museum situated in the city centre of Willemstad tells the story of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.

Strolling through Willemstad, the capital of Curacao, you might think that you are in a Dutch city.

More than 750 historic buildings flank the streets of Willemstad and the old city has been designated a Unesco world heritage site.

Downtown Willemstad you will find a floating marked made up of boats coming in from Venezuela filled up with fresh fruits, vegetables and now and then even fresh seafood.

Willemstad is a colourful and very dynamic city. You will feel the cultural diversity where ever you go. The colourful colonial houses, the Caribbean music floating out of a ghetto blaster, the people’s smiling faces, morning greetings, the relaxed mood, the smells and of course the ongoing sun combined with a gentle sea breeze makes you fall in love with Willemstad in an instant.

A day trip with the lovely sailship Insulinde is highly recommended. The ship is located beside the floating market.

There are so many things to do and see in Willemstad. We loved strolling through the district of Pietermaii taking in the authenticity of this charming neighborhood, sitting at the waterfront having a colorful drink or one of the very delicious fruit shakes watching daily life on Saint Ann’s bay, taking a day cruise with the majestic ship ” Insulinde ” or admiring the absolutely magnificent museum Kura Hulanda, an anthropological museum, telling the horrific story of forced relocation of Africans to the Americas and the Caribbean.

Henrik fell totally in love with this cute, lush woman

Willemstad enchants you with all its charm but what really sweeps you off your feet is the mind-blowing perfect paradisiacal powdery white sand beaches with their crystal clear turquoise water and an underwater life out of this world !!!

The beaches

Curaçao claims to have 38 beaches. We visited a great deal of them and found our favourites.

Some of the beaches have restaurants, toilets, bars, water sports, beach chairs and umbrellas and charges small admission others are free and offer no facilities. None of the beaches were ever packed with visitors.

The beach at Cas Abou is one of our favourite beaches

It is essential to have a rental car in Curacao. Taxis are expensive and public transport is infrequent. Once you have your rental you are free to explore the island and go beach hopping. And pick out your favourite beach. We absolutely fell in love with Kalki also called ” Alice in Wonderland ” one of the best snorkel spots on Curacao. Here we spotted spangled water snakes and green moray eels. And Cas Abou also got to be one of our top picks.

This paradise-like beach had the whitest powder sand, the clearest bounty like warm water and greenest coconut palm trees. Few things in life beats a day at a dreamlike beach where you only have to consider if the next thing to do is to go snorkelling with parrotfish or having a drink with a good splash of Caribbean rum in it 😀

We stayed at

Iguana Villa and apartments. We rented the studio apartment through www.airbnb.com

The one bedroom apartment at Iguana fitted us perfect. The best feature was the huge patio with the most magnificent sea view. We could walk into town within 20 minutes, 25min.  to Queen Emma Bridge and within half an hour we reached Pirates bay.

The room was very basic but clean and the caretaker Hernanda was friendly and helpful. The price was more than reasonable.
